Stargard Castle, Medieval castle in Burg Stargard, Germany.
Stargard Castle sits on a 90-meter hilltop and contains eleven preserved buildings, including a massive keep with 4-meter-thick walls. The complex is laid out with various rooms for living, defense, and administration across the site.
The castle was founded in 1237 when Duke Wartislaw III of Pomerania transferred the lands to the Margraves of Brandenburg. This transfer shaped how the settlement and its fortifications developed over the following centuries.
The chapel began as a gatehouse in the 13th century and later became a religious space serving the town's needs. You can still see how this room was adapted for spiritual gatherings over time.
A sturdy stairway leads to the keep's upper levels, where views extend across the surrounding landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Walkways connect the different buildings across the hilltop, making it easy to explore the entire complex on foot.
This is Germany's northernmost hill castle and once held the Crooked House, which served as a magistrate office until a fire destroyed it in 1919. The ruins of this building still stand on the grounds as a reminder of the disaster.
