Burg Stargard, municipality of Germany
Burg Stargard is a small town in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, built around a hilltop castle that rises clearly above the surrounding landscape. The town itself consists of a modest cluster of streets with older buildings gathered at the foot of the castle hill.
The castle at Burg Stargard was built in the 13th century as a seat for the bishops of Cammin and remained an important base of power in the region for several generations. Over time it passed through different hands, fell into disrepair, and was partially restored during the 19th century.
The town is small enough to explore entirely on foot, though the path up to the castle requires a short uphill walk. Visiting during daylight gives the best view over the surrounding lake district from the top of the hill.
The name Burg Stargard comes from a Slavic word meaning old fort, pointing to a settlement that existed on this site before the current structure was built. The castle is considered one of the best preserved of its kind in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
