Burg Stolberg, Medieval castle in Stolberg, Germany

Burg Stolberg is a medieval fortification perched on a hilltop with three sides dropping steeply, creating a striking outline against the North Rhine-Westphalian landscape. The complex combines original medieval structures with significantly rebuilt sections and now houses exhibition spaces, halls, and other areas open to visitors.

The fortress was built in the 12th century and underwent major reconstruction around 1450 to strengthen its defensive capabilities. In the early 1900s, industrialist Moritz Kraus directed extensive renovations that transformed the castle for modern purposes.

The knight's hall hosts concerts and cultural events, while displays throughout the complex tell the story of how craftsmanship and industry became central to local identity over centuries. These spaces show how the castle connects to the daily lives and traditions of the people who live nearby.

The site is open afternoons from Tuesday to Sunday, with limited hours during the winter season from October through March. Wear sturdy footwear since the grounds are hilly with some steep pathways that take effort to climb.

The former vaulted cellar now operates as a restaurant where guests dine surrounded by centuries-old stone walls. Diners sit directly within medieval stonework while enjoying meals, creating an unusual dining setting within the castle grounds.
