Burg Greifenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Hohenstein, Germany
The castle remains stand on a hilltop location with two distinctive towers, offering views across the surrounding Dill valley region.
Built in the 11th century and first documented in historical records in 1160, the castle faced destruction in 1298 by the counts of Nassau and Solms.
The site features a double chapel system with the Chapel of St. Catherine from 1462, containing Gothic architecture and historical frescoes.
The castle grounds include a restaurant, educational herb garden, and walking paths for visitors to explore the medieval fortification structures.
The Brother Tower contains three bells that produce specific tones and displays a gryphon weather vane, relating to the castle's name.
