Burg Gudenau, Medieval castle in Wachtberg, Germany.
Burg Gudenau is a residential fortress in Wachtberg built around a four-winged structure with a roughly rectangular layout. The facades show Gothic bay windows and a round corner tower with a slate roof, while three other corner towers carry Baroque domes and a five-story gate tower marks the entrance to the outer courtyard.
The fortress dates to the early 13th century and took on much of its current form around 1560, when major works introduced Renaissance elements into the design. Baroque additions followed in later centuries, gradually shaping the mix of styles visible today.
The Baroque garden at this site follows Italian design principles and is one of the few surviving private Baroque gardens in the region. Walking its formal paths, visitors can still read the original layout of the planted areas and alleys.
The site is best visited in dry weather since the paths run through open gardens and courtyards. Wear comfortable shoes and plan enough time to move between the different parts of the complex at a relaxed pace.
The octagonal clock tower of the complex stands exactly where two streams meet, making its position genuinely unusual for a tower of this kind. This placement used the water as a natural boundary and as a deliberate part of the overall design.
