Burg Hartenfels, Medieval castle in Hartenfels, Germany
The stone structure rises above the town with its grand spiral staircase and eight-windowed oriel displaying intricate sandstone carvings and decorations.
Built before 1249, the castle served as a strategic point for local governance and underwent multiple structural modifications throughout the medieval period.
The castle contains preserved murals painted by the Wittenberg-based Cranach Workshop, showcasing Renaissance artistic techniques and regional craftsmanship.
Visitors can climb 163 steps of the Hausmannsturm tower to reach a viewing platform overlooking the surrounding landscape and River Elbe.
Three brown bears named Jette, Bea, and Benno continue the castle's bear-keeping tradition that began in 1425.
