Burg Hartenfels

Burg Hartenfels is a stone castle in Hartenfels, Germany, that rises above the town with its impressive spiral staircase and eight-windowed oriel. The oriel displays intricate sandstone carvings and decorations that reflect medieval craftsmanship.

The castle was built before 1249 and served as a strategic point for local governance of the region. Over the centuries it underwent various structural changes that reflect its importance during the medieval period.

The castle displays murals created by the Wittenberg-based Cranach Workshop that reflect Renaissance artistic craftsmanship and techniques. These artworks shape the interior and speak to regional artistic traditions.

The Hausmannsturm tower is accessible by climbing about 163 steps and offers views of the surrounding landscape and the Elbe River from its platform. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the climb is steep and narrow.

Since 1425 the castle has housed bears, a tradition continued today with three bears named Jette, Bea, and Benno. This animal care practice is unusual for medieval castles and sets this place apart.
