Helleberg

Helleberg is a mountain summit in the Westerwald region, reaching about 491 meters in elevation as part of the Rhinisches Schiefergebirge range. An observation tower stands at the peak, and the area is well-connected by hiking trails.

During the Cold War, the mountain served as a strategic defense location with a radar installation for air surveillance. This military use shaped the site for several decades before the facility was eventually decommissioned.

The mountain serves as a gathering place for local communities, hosting regular concerts and cultural events throughout the seasons. The open-air stage draws visitors from the region who come to enjoy performances in this natural setting.

The mountain is easily accessible from Bundesstraße 8, with parking available near the observation tower. The paths on the summit are well-marked and suitable for hikers of varying abilities.

The observation platform was built in the late 1990s and offers views across three distinct mountain ranges on clear days. From this vantage point, visitors can survey the sprawling valley and make out distant mountain silhouettes.
