Malberg

Malberg is a mountain summit in Westerwaldkreis that rises to about 422 meters. The site is marked by a nature reserve with extended hiking paths that cross through the protected landscape.

This summit formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity that shaped the Westerwald region. Its creation from phonolitic lava reveals the geological past of the area.

The summit shows signs of early settlement through the remains of Celtic fortifications visible on the plateau. These structures reveal how important this location was for people many centuries ago.

Visitors find well-maintained hiking trails here that lead through the nature reserve with varying difficulty levels. The best seasons for hiking are spring through fall when paths are in good condition.

On the western slopes you can still find traces of old stone quarrying where phonolite was extracted for glassmaking. These abandoned quarry sites tell of a craft tradition that permanently marked the landscape.
