Alte Burg

Alte Burg is a late medieval castle ruin in Rotenhain with surviving foundation walls and substantial stone construction. The site features a deep stone-lined well that exemplifies the engineering used at such fortifications.

The fortification was built in the late 11th century and served the House of Diez to control their territorial holdings. Its location on a major trade route made it a key point in regional power dynamics during medieval times.

The site draws visitors with medieval-themed events, especially the annual Burgfest celebration each June. People come here to experience how life once revolved around such fortified strongholds.

The site can be reached via forest paths from the nearby sports field parking area or directly from the designated castle parking lot. Visit on dry days since the access routes pass through wooded terrain.

The castle well operates using an inverted coffee filter principle with clay and sand layers to naturally purify groundwater. This filtration system shows how medieval builders treated water without modern technology.
