Burg Altentierberg, Medieval castle ruins in Lautlingen, Germany.
Burg Altentierberg is castle ruins situated on a spur of Tierberg mountain at about 863 meters in elevation. What remains are walls and a distinctive moat system that once enclosed the fortification.
The Lords of Tierberg built this fortress after 1150, with its first written mention appearing in documents from 1216. Excavation work in 1927 by church painter Konrad Albert Koch uncovered the foundation stones and structural remains.
The St Wolfgang Chapel on the castle grounds served as a place of worship for those living here. It shows how religious life was woven into daily existence within the fortress walls.
The site sits elevated on a mountain spur and is reachable on foot, though the height and uneven terrain make it a modest hike. Sturdy footwear is wise, and visiting during daylight helps you see the moat systems and wall remains clearly.
The moat system stands out for its curved shape, revealing how the castle builders used the natural landscape to their advantage. An outer defensive zone with additional trenches made the site harder to breach and stronger against attack.
