Burg Löwenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Bad Zwesten, Germany.
Burg Löwenstein is a castle ruin perched on a basalt cone at the edge of Orthberg, built from stone remains of a medieval fortress. A distinctive keep with a conical roof rises about 27 meters high and dominates the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was constructed in the early 1200s and first documented in 1253. Its name comes from Werner von Bischofshausen, who named it after a symbol from his wife's family coat of arms.
The castle includes two distinct sections with the main fortress and outer bailey, demonstrating the architectural principles of medieval defensive structures in Hessen.
You can climb about 80 steps to reach a viewing platform roughly 26 meters high inside the keep. From the top, you see across Bad Zwesten and the valley toward Schwalmpforte.
The castle grounds contain a Jausenstation serving meals from Monday and Thursday through Sunday, with operating hours extending until 20:00.
