Neideck Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Wiesenttal, Germany
Neideck Castle is a medieval castle ruin set on a dolomite rock formation above the Wiesent valley in Bavaria. What remains on site includes two vaulted cellars, sections of the outer walls, and a gate structure dating to 1563.
The castle was built before 1120 by the Lords of Streitberg to control this stretch of the valley. It was destroyed in an attack in 1553 and left in ruins from that point on.
The ruins sit on a dolomite rock that rises above the gorge, giving visitors a wide view over the valley below. The remaining walls and gate structure show how buildings of this kind were once constructed in the region.
The ruin is reached by marked hiking trails that pass through the valley. The vaulted cellars tend to be open to visitors during the warmer months, so that period works best for a full visit.
Directly across the valley on the opposite hillside stands a second ruin, Burgruine Streitberg, so the two fortresses face each other across the gorge. This arrangement of two castles within direct sight of one another is rare in this part of Bavaria.
