Neideck Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Wiesenttal, Germany
Neideck is a medieval castle ruin in Wiesenttal, Bavaria. The main structure shows remaining walls, two vaulted cellars, and a gate structure from 1563, all situated on a dolomite rock formation and accessible via hiking trails.
The castle was built before 1120 by the Lords of Streitberg as a military base in this valley region. It was destroyed in an attack in 1553 and never rebuilt afterward.
The fortress shows medieval building methods and defensive ideas used in this region. Visitors can see today how the location controlled access through the valley.
The ruin is reachable via marked hiking trails that run through the valley landscape. Visiting works best during warmer months when access to the cellars is open to guests.
On the opposite hillside stands a second fortress called Burgruine Neideck, creating a rare example of two castles facing each other directly. This arrangement shows the military strategy of how both structures jointly protected the valley.
