Burgruine Rotenburg, Medieval castle ruin in Wieslet, Germany.
Burgruine Rotenburg is a castle ruin situated on a sandstone outcrop near Wieslet. Visible remains include sections of perimeter walls, foundations of a central tower, and defensive ditches that once surrounded the fortified structure.
The fortress was built between the 11th and 13th centuries as a stronghold for the Lords of Waldeck. It later came under the control of the Rötteln family through inheritance and gradually fell into ruin over subsequent centuries.
Archaeological excavations in 1976 uncovered sections of the ring wall and central keep, revealing construction techniques from medieval German fortification architecture.
The site is accessible on a plateau in an elevated location with broad views across the surrounding landscape. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and incomplete structures when exploring the ruins.
Pottery fragments found during excavations suggest an older predecessor fortress existed here in the 11th century. This discovery indicates the site was occupied longer than the visible medieval remains would suggest.
