Hodenhagen Castle

Hodenhagen Castle is a medieval fortification with oval earthen ramparts positioned next to the Meiße River. The site was surrounded by water-filled defensive moats and today lies partially within a wooded area adjacent to farmland.

The castle was founded around 1200 by the von Hodenberg family after they relocated from Altenbücken. The fortification was destroyed in 1289 by Duke Otto.

The ruins bear the name of the von Hodenberg family who ruled here during medieval times and remain connected to this place today. Visitors can sense the memory of this noble family in the remains of the fortification.

The ruins are located near the entrance of Serengeti Park and are easily accessible. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and partially surrounded by forest.

Inside the fortification once stood a round tower with roughly 10 meters in diameter, whose thick walls are still visible in the archaeological remains today. This construction was typical of medieval castles and shows the skill of builders from that era.
