Burg Hoheneybach, Medieval castle ruins in Geislingen an der Steige, Germany.
Burg Hoheneybach is a medieval castle ruin located on the Himmelsfelsen mountain in Geislingen an der Steige. The site still displays stone walls and a deep moat carved behind the rock formation.
The fortress was first documented in 1265 and initially belonged to the Counts of Helfenstein before they sold it to Ellwangen Monastery in 1291. In the 17th century it suffered severe damage during a major European conflict.
The fortress was woven into regional identity for centuries as a symbol of local power. Today its ruins reflect how castles shaped the lives and territories of the families who controlled them.
The ruins are reachable by hiking trails that link several historical sites across the Geislingen an der Steige region. The climb is manageable for people with average fitness and offers views over the surrounding area.
After severe damage during a 17th century conflict, the family owning the fortress relocated and built a new residence elsewhere instead. This abandonment meant the old structure was never rebuilt and survives today as ruins.
