Burg Scharfenberg, Medieval hilltop castle in Donzdorf, Germany.
Burg Scharfenberg is a castle complex on a hilltop near Donzdorf with two main buildings and a residential tower. The ruins spread across approximately 68 by 27 meters (223 by 89 feet) and display stonework from different periods.
The castle was founded in 1156 and belonged to the Scharfenberg family, who gained importance under Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. Later renovations transformed it into a Renaissance residence, changing the medieval fortress.
The castle shows how living spaces changed during the Middle Ages, from a strict fortress into a more comfortable residence. Renaissance renovations are still visible in the layout and structures today.
Access to the ruins runs along a gravel path to the castle courtyard, though the residential tower remains privately owned and off limits. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is rough and uneven in places.
The eastern outer wall still displays original buckelquader masonry from the Staufer period, offering insight into medieval building techniques. These distinctive stones are a rare witness to construction methods of the 12th century.
