Burg Hohenstein is a castle ruin in Dietingen featuring stone walls, tower remains, and foundations from the medieval period. The structures are positioned on elevated terrain and display the typical layout of a medieval fortress.

Burg Hohenstein was founded by the noble lords of Urslingen and first mentioned in documents before 1100, making it one of the oldest castle sites on the upper Neckar. In the 13th century it passed to the lords of Zimmern. Because they sided with Württemberg in the imperial war against several imperial cities in 1311–1312, the imperial city of Rottweil attacked and destroyed the castle in 1312.

The ruins reveal how medieval builders designed defensive spaces using the elevated hillside to their advantage, with walls positioned to watch over the valley below. Walking through the site, you can sense how the placement and construction reflected the military needs of the time.

The site is accessible via marked hiking paths from Dietingen village center leading up to the elevated castle ruins. Sturdy footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain and the hillside location.

The ruins display traces of locally sourced limestone blocks that were precisely cut and fitted together to form the walls. This construction method was common for fortifications built in this time and region.
