Burg Herrenzimmern is a medieval castle on a mountain spur near Rottweil, surrounded by deep gorges with walls reaching four stories in places. The grounds include chapel ruins, residential structures, and a festival area with shelter and a fountain.
Construction of the castle began around 1050 as the ancestral home of the von Zimmer family. It was sold to the city of Rottweil in 1595 and has remained under municipal care since then.
The chapel ruins display a bronze relief of Saint James created by artist Tobias Kammerer, inviting quiet reflection. This artwork brings a contemporary spiritual dimension to the site.
The site is reached via marked walking paths from Herrenzimmern village, with parking available near the trailhead. The paths are walkable on foot, though sturdy footwear and some time should be planned for.
The grounds can be used by groups for gatherings during warmer months, with barbecue facilities and shelter available. This makes the site a rare connection between history and community use.
