Burg Waseneck, Medieval castle ruins in Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany
Burg Waseneck is a medieval castle ruin in Oberndorf am Neckar situated on a hilltop overlooking the river valley. The site preserves remains of the main tower, courtyard walls, and the fortification's defensive structures.
The Dukes of Teck built this fortification around 1220 to control the Neckar valley. It was expanded between 1270 and 1300 before gradually falling into disrepair during the 1400s.
The name Waseneck comes from the marshy meadows that once surrounded the site. Visitors can still see how the landscape shapes the way the ruins sit on the hillside.
The ruins are reached by a forest trail that leads uphill to the site. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path is uneven and includes steep sections.
Archaeologists uncovered the foundation walls in the 1970s and rebuilt sections of the tower to reveal its original structure. This work allows visitors today to understand how the fortress actually looked.
