Schloss Lichtenegg, Medieval château in Epfendorf, Germany.
Schloss Lichtenegg is a castle in Epfendorf perched on a hill above Schenkenbach Valley. The building has two unequal wings connected by a narrow structure that encloses a protected courtyard.
The castle was built around 1560 on medieval foundations and was originally called Harthausen Castle. The name changed in 1836, and parts of the Romanesque cellar remain standing today.
The chapel inside is dedicated to Saint Michael and shows how faith mattered to those who lived here. You can see religious beliefs expressed through the building's design and decoration.
The castle is privately owned and the interior is closed to visitors, but hiking trails nearby offer views of the exterior. Plan several hours for a walk around the grounds to see all sides of the building.
The hall inside still has its original wooden beam ceilings, showing how rooms looked centuries ago. It remains one of the few inhabited castles in the valley that is actively maintained.
