St. Mauritius, Catholic church in Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany

St. Mauritius in Bochingen, part of Oberndorf am Neckar, combines a late Gothic tower and choir with a nave built in 1811/1812 by Friedrich Bernhard Adam Groß. The tower has four storeys, filled sound windows and a steep four-sided pyramidal roof; the nave is flat-ceilinged with a pointed triumphal arch. The choir, enclosed as a sacristy, has a net vault resting on nine corbels carved with saints' busts and evangelist symbols.

The parish is first documented in 1364, when it was assigned to the Augustinian monastery of Oberndorf; the patronage of St. Mauritius appears in writing in 1529. The nave was rebuilt in 1811/12 by Friedrich Bernhard Adam Groß, while the tower and choir remain late Gothic. The monastery's dissolution in 1805 transferred patronage to Württemberg, and since 1827 the church has belonged to the Diocese of Rottenburg.

The parish registers, kept since 1588 according to Bachmor's chronicle, record the names of Bochingen families. The church is dedicated to Saint Maurice, first documented in 1529; his figure with shield and banner appears on a keystone of the choir vault. The wooden statues of Peter, Paul, Maurice and Candidus on the choir walls come from the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich.

The nave and the late-Gothic choir with its ribbed vault are the parts to look at; the choir was plastered over and used as a sacristy after the nave was added in 1811/12. The choir's net vault rests on nine corbels carved with busts of saints and evangelist symbols, including Andrew, Martha and James the Elder. Its three keystones show the Saviour, Mary with the Child, and Maurice as a knight with shield and banner bearing three birds.
