Burg Hohenstein

Burg Hohenstein is a medieval stone castle situated on a dolomite rock formation at the western edge of Hohenstein in the Franconian Alps. The complex contains several buildings including a chapel and a long house that remain standing today.

The castle was first mentioned in 1163 as the seat of castellan Sicolinus and later transferred from the Sulzbach counts to the Hohenstaufen dynasty. These shifts in ownership shaped its importance during the medieval period.

The chapel serves as a venue for civil weddings, while the Long House hosts regional events and conferences throughout the year.

The grounds are accessible to visitors, though some areas feature uneven terrain and stairs due to the castle's location on rocky ground. Plan for walking over natural rock surfaces and varying elevation changes throughout your visit.

The south wall of the main palace collapsed in 2000, prompting emergency work to stabilize the remaining structure. This event highlights how fragile medieval buildings can be and the ongoing efforts required to keep them standing.
