Burg Hohenstein, Medieval castle in Hohenstein, Germany
The stone fortress sits on a dolomite rock formation at the western edge of Hohenstein in the Franconian Alps region.
First mentioned in 1163 when Sicolinus was appointed as castle warden, the structure changed ownership from Sulzbach counts to Hohenstaufen dynasty.
The castle chapel hosts civil wedding ceremonies while the Long House serves as a venue for regional cultural events and conferences.
The castle grounds remain open to visitors, with specific areas preserved through renovation efforts initiated by the Hohenstein Beautification Association in 1901.
The south wall of the main palace collapsed in 2000, leading to emergency preservation work to stabilize the remaining structure.
