Burg Hohenwaldeck, Medieval castle ruins near Schliersee, Germany
The stone fortress stands on a rocky ridge 209 meters above Schliersee lake, featuring remaining walls up to eight meters high.
The castle first appeared in documents from 1301 and 1312, built by the Lords of Waldeck who held high offices at the Freising monastery.
The castle represents the architectural heritage of Bavaria and serves as a testament to medieval defensive construction techniques in the region.
The castle ruins are currently closed to visitors due to necessary repair measures, with renovations scheduled for completion in autumn 2024.
The castle tower, measuring 8.5 meters square, displays large cornerstone blocks and overlooks the surrounding Alpine landscape from its 986-meter elevation.
