Burg Hohenwaldeck

Burg Hohenwaldeck is a castle ruin perched on a rocky ridge overlooking Schliersee lake, with medieval walls still standing tall. The site sits at roughly 986 meters elevation and commands views across the surrounding Alpine terrain.

The castle first appeared in records from 1301 and 1312 and belonged to the Lords of Waldeck, who held influential positions at Freising monastery. This monastic connection shaped the fortress's role in the region's medieval power structure.

The castle represents the architectural heritage of Bavaria and serves as a testament to medieval defensive construction techniques in the region.

When visiting, note that the ruin sits on a ridge with steep access in places. Sturdy hiking boots and weather-resistant clothing are advised, as conditions at this elevation can change quickly.

The castle tower, measuring 8.5 meters square, displays large cornerstone blocks and overlooks the surrounding Alpine landscape from its 986-meter elevation.
