Burg Meiningen is a castle ruin located on elevated ground with defensive walls and towers from the medieval period. The structure reflects the defensive architecture typical of the Thuringia region, with building styles spanning from Gothic to Baroque forms.
The fortress was built around 1511 in the Gothic style and served as a key defensive position for the region. In the 17th century, it was largely dismantled and incorporated into what would become Elisabethenburg Palace.
The castle displays architectural features from different periods, showing how the fortification was adapted and rebuilt over time. Visitors can see how earlier defensive structures were incorporated into later designs.
The castle site is centrally located in Meiningen and can be viewed from the outside, though it adjoins the palace grounds. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and pathways are not flat throughout the area.
