Burg Neublankenheim, Medieval castle ruins in Üxheim, Germany
Burg Neublankenheim is a castle ruin in the forest near Üxheim in the Eifel region, with remains that are still clearly visible. The core of the complex consists of stone walls arranged around an empty courtyard, with a tower at one corner.
The castle was built in the 1330s and first mentioned in written records in 1341 when it was granted to Gerhard V von Blankenheim. The complex gradually lost importance over the following centuries and decayed into ruins.
The castle shows how medieval noble families made their power visible over the surrounding land. The ruins stand today as a sign of that era when encountered during a walk through the area.
The ruins are located in the forest and can be reached on foot, but require sturdy footwear and caution when entering the lower sections. You should allow time for an unhurried walk and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
Scientists used tree ring analysis to determine that the castle was built precisely between 1335 and 1339. This provided a rare opportunity to pinpoint the exact construction years of the structure.
