Burg Hugofels, Medieval castle ruins on hilltop in Immenstadt, Germany

Burg Hugofels consists of stone ruins on a wooded ridge above the Alpsees near Immenstadt in Bavaria. The remaining walls clearly show the outlines of the former main tower with its four corner reinforcements and reveal the scale of this historic fortification.

The castle was built in the early 13th century as part of a dual fortress complex with the neighboring Burg Rothenfels. It gradually lost importance after passing into the hands of the Counts of Königsegg-Aulendorf in 1567.

The square residential tower with four corner reinforcements represents an architectural design rarely found in the German Alpine region, following French and Swiss models.

The ruin site is freely accessible and offers two natural viewpoint areas on the remaining walls with views over the Alpsees and surrounding valley. Information boards at the location explain the building history and help visitors understand the different structures of the fortification.

A small water cistern in the basement of the main tower was discovered during excavations between 1932 and 1939 in the northeastern corner. This rare water storage system shows how residents at this high elevation secured their water supply.
