Immenstadt im Allgäu

Immenstadt im Allgäu is a town in the Oberallgäu district of Germany, sitting at 729 meters elevation between the mountains Mittag and Immenstädter Horn near the Großer Alpsee lake. Through the center run narrow lanes with shops and inns among older buildings from different centuries.

Emperor Charles IV granted town rights in 1360, after the settlement first appeared in administrative records of the Diocese of Konstanz in 1275. Over the centuries ownership changed several times until the town became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in the 19th century.

This settlement takes its name from the word for beehive, pointing to a long tradition of beekeeping in the area. Around the main streets you will see half-timbered houses with painted facades and small squares where locals meet near fountains.

Every September farmers drive their cattle down from mountain pastures in a celebration called Viehscheid, decorating the cows with flower wreaths. Visitors can watch the colorful procession through the streets and experience the festive mood.
