Schloss Ittendorf, Medieval castle in Markdorf, Germany.

Schloss Ittendorf is a castle in the Ittendorf district of Markdorf built at 440 meters above sea level, featuring three stories with distinctive stepped gables. A medieval ring wall surrounds the entire structure and shapes its overall appearance significantly.

The castle was first documented around 1260 and built by the Schenken von Schmalegg family before being sold to Salem Monastery in 1302. This early ownership history shows the shifting importance of the site for different powers in the region.

The name Ittendorf comes from the surrounding area and the castle still defines the local landscape with its distinctive stepped gables. Visitors can experience the architecture as evidence of regional building traditions, even though the structure remains privately used.

The privately managed castle sits near St. Martin's Church in the Ittendorf district and can be reached via local roads in the Bodenseekreis region. Visitors should know that the building is privately used and can only be viewed from the outside.

From 1931 to 1933 the castle housed the Baden Farmers School before it was forcibly closed. This episode shows how the site's use changed fundamentally with the political shifts of that era.
