Ruine Bernburg

Ruine Bernburg, Medieval castle ruin in Rottweil, Germany.

Ruine Bernburg is a castle ruin near Rottweil that stands on a hilltop with visible wall fragments and tower remains. The original fortification had three sections arranged in succession - outer ward, main keep, and rear fortification - with portions of this layout still discernible today.

The fortress was built in the early 1200s to defend the valley below and was destroyed around 1417, possibly during conflicts with the town of Rottweil. Its destruction likely resulted from local power struggles of that era.

The ruins take their name from the hill where they stand and show how castles of this period were built to watch over and protect the surrounding valley. The remaining structures reveal how people designed fortifications with both defense and oversight in mind.

The site is accessible via several walking paths that lead northward from Rottweil's town center. Reaching it on foot is the most practical approach since the ruin sits on elevated terrain surrounded by walking trails.

Despite being destroyed 600 years ago, the ring walls of its three sections still stand in their original positions, revealing how the fortress was once arranged. This makes the site unusual because visitors can still trace the inner structure of the medieval layout.
