Hiltenburg, Castle ruin in Bad Ditzenbach, Germany.
The Hiltenburg is a castle ruin perched on Schlossberg mountain near Bad Ditzenbach at approximately 717 meters elevation. The site retains stone wall sections and a well-preserved keep that now serves as an exhibition space.
The fortress was founded in 1289 and controlled trade routes through the upper Filstal valley. Over the centuries it gradually declined until becoming the ruin visible today.
The keep houses an exhibition with medieval artifacts found during excavations, showing how people lived here around 900 years ago. These objects tell stories about daily life, crafts, and domestic practices in that era.
The ascent follows a hiking trail of about 3.5 kilometers from the parking area at Café Filsblick, taking roughly 45 minutes uphill. The exhibition inside the keep is accessible from April through October on Sundays and holidays.
The keep contains two exhibition levels at different heights, revealing how the original defensive structure was built and organized. This arrangement shows how different functions were arranged vertically during medieval times.
