The Memorial to the Victims of Nazi Tyranny stands on the Platz der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus at the corner of Brienner Strasse and Maximiliansplatz. Andreas Sobeck's winning design, about six metres tall, consists of a basalt stele topped by a latticed steel cube; inside this symbolic dungeon a gas-fed eternal flame burns in a bowl. Since the 2014 renovation, an 18.5-metre bronze plaque behind the flame bears the inscription "Im Gedenken an die Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft".

The memorial was unveiled on 8 November 1985 by Munich's mayor Georg Kronawitter; sculptor Andreas Sobeck, born in Winzer, won the city's competition with his design. It replaced a granite stone by Karl Oppenrieder, set up in 1962 as a temporary marker and moved to the Platz der Freiheit in Neuhausen after the square was redesigned in the early 1980s. The 2014 renovation added a bronze plaque behind the flame.
