German horticultural museum, Horticulture museum in egapark, Germany

The German Horticultural Museum occupies the historic Defensionskaserne (defence barracks) of the Cyriaksburg citadel within the egapark grounds in Erfurt. Its permanent exhibition, Garten! Vom Paradies ins Einkaufsregal, covers about 1,500 square metres and examines the relationship between humans and nature in food, medicine and climate protection. Displays include an interactive digital ancestral gallery, a kinetic plant illustrating photosynthesis, and a shopping shelf of horticultural products. A herb garden and a citadel well about 40 metres deep are also part of the site.

The museum occupies the Defensionskaserne, a defensive barracks of the Cyriaksburg citadel. In 1885, on the initiative of the Erfurt beautification society, part of the fortress grounds was turned into a garden. The city acquired the citadel and grounds in 1919. The horticultural museum opened in 1961 alongside the first International Horticultural Exhibition of the socialist countries; architect Peter Kulka led a rebuild after a 1992 reconception, and the Stiftung Deutsches Gartenbaumuseum Erfurt has run it since 1995.

The exhibition shows how people use plants for food, medicine, and gardening, and what role cultivation plays in daily life. Visitors see practical examples of how gardens have long been part of human activities.

The museum can only be visited with a valid egapark ticket, as it stands inside the park grounds on the Cyriaksburg. Regular museum operations pause in winter, so plan a visit for the garden season. The historic building has been made almost barrier-free, and free Wi-Fi is available in the foyer and the Palmencafé lounge.

This is the only museum in Germany entirely dedicated to horticulture, giving it a special place in the German museum landscape. This focus makes it a valuable place for anyone interested in the history of gardening.
