Diepholzer Moor

The Diepholzer Moor is a nature reserve with extensive wetland areas covering approximately 500 hectares and offering diverse habitats. The landscape consists of open bog sections, marsh vegetation, and water surfaces that together form a mosaic of natural environments.

The area received protected status in 1990 to preserve the valuable wetlands for future generations. This was an important step to save one of the last intact moors in the region from destruction.

The moor's name reflects its location in the Diepholz Basin, a landscape shaped by wetlands for centuries. Today, open areas and water surfaces serve as resting grounds for numerous birds during their seasonal migrations.

The nature reserve lies west of Diepholz and is easily accessible, with paths and viewpoints that offer visitors insights into the moorland. It is advisable to bring weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear, as the ground is often damp and soft.

The site is known as an important resting spot for migratory birds, particularly cranes on their long journeys between breeding and wintering grounds. Visitors can observe thousands of these birds during the right seasons.
