Diepholzer Moor, Nature reserve in Diepholz, Germany

The Diepholzer Moor is a 498-hectare nature reserve (NSG HA 148) about 2 km west of Diepholz town centre, south of the B 214. It consists mostly of raised bog that was partly never cut for peat and is now regenerating, with grassland areas interspersed and partly embedded.

Since 1983 the BUND Diepholzer Moorniederung has developed and maintained the moors of the area. On 9 April 1990 the Diepholzer Moor was declared a nature reserve (NSG HA 148), with the Diepholz district as the lower nature conservation authority. The 498-hectare site is also the FFH area 429 "Diepholzer Moor".

The moor's name reflects its location in the Diepholz Basin, a landscape shaped by wetlands for centuries. Today, open areas and water surfaces serve as resting grounds for numerous birds during their seasonal migrations.

The nature reserve lies west of Diepholz and is easily accessible, with paths and viewpoints that offer visitors insights into the moorland. It is advisable to bring weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear, as the ground is often damp and soft.

The site is known as an important resting spot for migratory birds, particularly cranes on their long journeys between breeding and wintering grounds. Visitors can observe thousands of these birds during the right seasons.
