Schloss Rheda is a former moated castle on a raised sand dune above the upper Ems in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Its core is the near-square Kapellenturm, about 16 metres on each side, which combines gate tower, double chapel and residential tower; a Baroque wing of 1745–47 and a Renaissance tract of 1612 adjoin it. A separate outer ward with 18th-century half-timbered service buildings lies on its own island.

Schloss Rheda grew from a powerful early moated castle on an artificially raised sand dune above the Ems, whose core still rises over six metres above the river. The chapel tower, combining gate tower, double chapel and residential tower, dates largely to the first quarter of the 13th century, documented by window timber of 1223. A Renaissance wing followed in 1612, the new gate passage in 1719 and the long Baroque residence in 1745–47. Since 1557 the castle has been the seat of the House of Bentheim-Tecklenburg.

The name Rheda derives from the lordship the castle anchored, and since 1557 the House of Bentheim-Tecklenburg has held it as its ancestral seat. In the Marstall, opened as a museum in 1988, stand coaches, sledges and a fire engine built in Gütersloh in 1788 for the castle; the Komödienhaus of 1790, once a court theatre, holds a toy and costume collection.

The castle and its park lie on the 100 Castles Route; the outer ward with its half-timbered mill, stables and Comedy House can be walked around freely. The coach museum in the 1760 Marstall and the toy and costume museum in the Comedy House opened in 1988. The music library is on loan to the Münster university library, not kept at the castle.

The chapel tower's original gate passage is walled up on both sides and now houses the archive. Its third storey has large circular windows, a sign of its sacred function. The tower combines gate, double chapel and residence in one nearly square structure about 16 metres on each side.
