Kloster Thron, Medieval monastery in Wehrheim, Germany

Description

Kloster Thron is a former Cistercian convent located near the Lochmühle leisure park in the Taunus region, featuring medieval buildings including the main monastery, agricultural structures, and a spacious terrace. The estate now operates as an agricultural property and accommodates visitors for ceremonies, celebrations, and gatherings within its preserved buildings.

History

Count Gerhard von Dietz founded the Cistercian convent on March 20, 1243, on the Niedernhain estate, establishing what would become an important religious institution. Within about 80 years, the community had grown to approximately 60 women from noble families, transforming it into a significant center in the region.

Culture

The monastery served as a center for religious education and spiritual practices for women from noble families, a role that shaped its physical spaces and surroundings. The buildings and grounds still reflect the communal life that took place within their walls.

Practical

The site welcomes visitors for events and gatherings, though it is advisable to inquire in advance about visiting times and availability for tours. Its location near the Lochmühle leisure park and the Taunus region makes it easily accessible and allows you to combine a visit with other activities in the area.

Did you know?

At its height, the monastery was economically powerful, controlling 145 tithing rights spread across areas like Frankfurt, Friedberg, and Wetzlar. Beyond these extensive land claims, the institution owned approximately 600 acres of forest, making it a considerable economic force in the region.
