Lönsturm, Observation tower in Salzhemmendorf, Germany
Lönsturm is an observation tower that stands on Kanstein, the highest point of Thüster Berg. The sandstone structure offers views from its platform across the surrounding hills and, on clear days, toward Brocken mountain in the Harz region and the Hermannsdenkmal monument.
The tower was built in 1928 by local residents as a sandstone structure standing 18 meters high. In the following decades, it was extended in the 1970s and again in the 1990s as growing beech trees began to obstruct the views.
The tower bears the name of Hermann Löns, a regional writer who frequently visited the Kanstein area during his outdoor excursions.
Access to the tower platform is free and reached by climbing stairs that vary in difficulty depending on the season and weather conditions. Visitors should keep in mind that climbing can be difficult during rain or strong winds, and sturdy footwear is recommended.
The tower is named after Hermann Löns, a regional writer who frequently visited the Kanstein area for his outdoor walks. This link to the region's literary history makes the site particularly meaningful for those interested in this cultural heritage.
