Stadtmuseum Gera

The Stadtmuseum Gera occupies an 18th-century baroque building that originally served as an orphanage and correctional institution. The building spans four floors and displays artwork, natural objects, and regional art collections, including a significant altar piece from the 15th century.

The museum was established in 1914 and suffered complete destruction during an air raid in 1945, but was rebuilt afterward. It reopened at its original location in 1956.

The museum displays works by regional artists and historical objects that document how people lived here over centuries. These collections reflect what residents of Gera valued and how they preserved their past.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM and offers access to exhibitions across multiple floors. The building in the city center is easy to reach and well signposted for visitors.

Underground storage areas beneath the old town serve as additional exhibition spaces, offering a special sense of the place's history. These hidden rooms show how the city extends into the depths below.
