Gerichtshöfe, Architectural ensemble in Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
The Gerichtshöfe is a large complex built around four interconnected courtyards linked by eight staircases, forming one of Germany's largest studio buildings in the Gesundbrunnen district. Multiple floors offer workspace for hundreds of artists and craftspeople across different creative and manual disciplines.
The complex was originally built as a courthouse before being repurposed by artists in the 1980s who began renting studio spaces. This transformation turned it into one of Berlin's most important centers for contemporary art production.
More than 70 artists and craftspeople work in the Gerichtshöfe and open their studios to visitors during regular exhibitions and events. The place comes alive through different artistic disciplines meeting and collaborating on shared projects.
Access is through two main entrances at Gerichtstraße 12-13 and Wiesenstraße 62, with GESOBAU AG managing the property. It remains an active artist workspace, so visitors should be respectful and check ahead about current exhibitions or open studio days.
Every September the complex opens for its annual Open Studios event when thousands of visitors explore the workshops and interact directly with artists. This festival offers a chance to watch creators at work and speak with them about their practices.
