Duftwald, Scented forest trail in Bad Kissingen, Germany
Duftwald is a forest park northwest of Bad Kissingen containing around 4,000 trees and shrubs from about 50 fragrant species. A walkable path leads through this roughly 1 hectare area, allowing visitors to encounter all the plants on site.
The park was created in 2001 to mark Bad Kissingen's 1,200th anniversary celebration. The project was directed and realized by Karl-Heinz Knörr from the State Forestry Office.
The place draws its name from the fragrant plants that visitors walk among on a dedicated path. Different tree species like the Japanese Katsura reveal their scents during specific seasons, encouraging people to experience nature through smell.
The forest trail is located behind Seehof Sanatorium near Highway 286 and has no accessibility barriers. There is no entrance fee, it is open year-round, and you can visit in any weather or at any time of day.
In autumn the Japanese Katsura tree releases a strong gingerbread scent as its leaves begin to fall. Witch hazel and cinnamon raspberries also come alive at particular times of year, filling the forest with additional fragrances.
