Krankenhaus Am Urban

Krankenhaus Am Urban is a hospital with late 19th-century architectural heritage in Berlin's Friedrichshain district. The main buildings feature characteristic brick structures and functional layouts with several connected wings designed to house different medical specialties.

The facility opened in 1887 as Berlin's third municipal hospital and responded to the city's growing need for medical care. It later became a model for hospital design in Europe due to its well-thought-out spatial organization.

The building reflects how doctors in the 1800s thought hospitals should be organized, with its design showing their ideas about patient care and treatment spaces. The layout with separate wings for different departments was an innovative approach for that era.

The complex is located near the Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station and is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors should know that not all areas of the site are open to the public, as it remains an active hospital.

The hospital was among the first places in Germany to use X-ray technology, which attracted doctors from across Europe to visit and learn. This made it a center where medical professionals exchanged ideas and new techniques spread.
