Fichte-Bunker, Brick gas holder in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Germany.
The Fichte-Bunker is a circular brick gas storage structure standing 27 meters high with a 56-meter diameter in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. It features solid brick walls with multiple interior levels and now houses luxury apartments in its upper sections while keeping its original external appearance.
The structure was built in 1883 as a gas storage facility for the city's street lighting system. During World War II it was converted into a shelter that served thousands of residents seeking safety.
The structure shows how Berliners adapted industrial buildings for survival during wartime. Today it reflects the role these spaces played in protecting the city's residents during dangerous times.
The building sits near Fichtestraße and is accessible by public transport. Visits to the preserved lower sections are possible through organized tours that must be arranged beforehand.
This is the last remaining brick gasometer of its kind in Berlin and a rare example of 19th-century industrial architecture. Its conversion demonstrates how the city transformed a wartime necessity into contemporary residential space while preserving the historic shell.
