Hochbunker Heckeshorn

Hochbunker Heckeshorn is a six-story defensive bunker in Steglitz-Zehlendorf with reinforced concrete walls four meters thick. The structure includes air purification systems, emergency generators, ventilation equipment, and water infrastructure designed to support 700 people.

Built in 1943, this bunker served as a command center for Berlin's air defense during World War II. It coordinated fighter aircraft operations across a large region during the city's heavy bombing campaigns.

The bunker reflects how Berlin transformed its military structures into places serving new purposes over time. Visitors can see how a wartime building became part of the city's healthcare infrastructure.

Access to the bunker requires preparation as the interior spaces are underground with narrow passages between thick concrete walls. Allow adequate time for exploration and remember that interior rooms lack natural light.

The facility can transform into a fully equipped hospital with operating rooms in less than two days when needed. Medical equipment has been maintained in operational condition for decades.
