Giant sequoias near Kölpin, Natural monument in Demen, Germany

Two giant sequoias stand near Kölpin in the Sternberg Lake District Nature Park, with one reaching over 40 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter.

The sequoias were planted in the 1870s under estate owner Julius Hüniken and estate forester Heinrich Hagge, introducing California native trees to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

A memorial at the base of the trees honors Heinrich Hagge, commemorating his service in the forest estate from 1875 to 1904.

Visitors can reach the sequoias by following wooden signposts along a 350-meter path west of the L 9 state road in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district.

Two small ponds accompany the sequoias, including the larger Schapwäsch pond, whose name derives from Low German meaning sheep wash.
