Engdener Wüste/ Heseper Moor

The Engdener Wüste Heseper Moor spreads across 1,012 hectares of varied landscapes, including sand dunes, wetlands, pine forests, and oak-birch woodlands.

The area received official protection status in December 2002, incorporating the previous Engdener Wüste reserve established in 1988 within its boundaries.

The reserve forms part of the European Union's Natura 2000 network, reflecting German commitment to preserving natural habitats for future generations.

The nature reserve extends through four municipalities - Engden, Nordhorn, Wietmarschen, and Emsbüren - with access points available from multiple locations.

The protected area houses the Crested Newt population and contains eight distinct habitat types, including Northern Atlantic wet heaths and European dry heaths.
