Schloss Herzford

Schloss Herzford is a Baroque castle in Lingen located on the left bank of the Ems River. The structure includes gardens, bridges, and an outer courtyard that were designed by two prominent architects.

The property was built in 1337 as Burg thor Slipse and received its current form between 1717 and 1723. The reconstruction took place under architect Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius.

The castle displays architectural features from both early and late Baroque periods, reflecting how noble tastes in design changed over time. This mix of different building phases makes it a good example of how castle architecture developed in the region.

The castle is located at Herzford 1 in Lingen and remains private property, but can be viewed from marked cycling paths in the area. The site is easily accessible by bicycle and offers several viewpoints from the surrounding landscape.

The name Hriesforda was first documented in 890 and refers to wild animal populations and agricultural conditions of the surrounding area. This ancient origin shows how closely the history of this place is tied to the land and its use.
