Historisches Rathaus, Historic town hall in Lingen, Germany
The Historisches Rathaus occupies the northwest corner of the market square beside Große Straße and is a compact stone building with distinctive Baroque features. It maintains its original exterior appearance while housing the functions of an administrative center.
The building was constructed in 1555 on earlier foundations from the 15th century, replacing a structure lost in the 1548 city fire. This rebuilding effort was part of the town's recovery following that disaster.
The building displays a Baroque facade with stepped gables influenced by Dutch Renaissance design. This distinctive style makes it a recognizable feature of the market square and sets it apart from other structures in the old town.
The town hall is now used for official receptions and wedding ceremonies, so access may be limited at certain times. Visiting the market square during daytime hours allows you to see the building's exterior most clearly.
A carillon with figurine display installed in the bell tower in 1952 produces music during special occasions. This automated mechanism performs every three years at the Pentecost celebration Kivelingsfest, giving the building a distinctive musical tradition.
