Eisenbahnkaserne, Military barracks in Munich, Germany.
Eisenbahnkaserne is a former military barracks complex in Munich that once sprawled across several hectares with training grounds, offices, and soldier housing. Today the buildings serve as student dormitories and administrative offices while retaining their original 19th-century structure.
Built between 1888 and 1889, it housed the Railway Battalion of the Bavarian Army and remained active until 1976. The complex witnessed both World Wars and represents a chapter in Bavaria's military past.
The site housed railway troops and soldiers for generations, and their presence is still felt in the local identity and building layouts. The architecture reflects the military discipline of that era and continues to shape the neighborhood's character.
The site is now partially open to the public with student housing and administrative offices in the preserved buildings. Visitors can view the exterior areas and the memorial near Dachauer Straße, which features eight metal plaques documenting historical events.
Architect Christoph Maas oversaw a renovation that preserved the 19th-century fabric while transforming the space for contemporary student living. This balance between heritage and modern function makes it a rare blend of military history and present-day use.
