Schwere Reiter, Cultural center in Munich, Germany
The Schwere Reiter is a cultural center in Munich that provides space for performances and artistic work. The facilities include a main stage, a smaller rehearsal and workshop area, and a visitor bar located in the foyer at Dachauer Straße 114a.
The center opened in 2008 on the grounds of former military barracks, marking the conversion of the site from military to cultural use. This transformation took place in Munich's Maxvorstadt district.
Three artistic collectives shape the space: Tanztendenz presents dance performances, Pathos München stages theater productions, and Scope organizes music events. This mix of artistic disciplines defines the regular program and daily character of the venue.
When visiting, you can move through the different spaces to watch performances and rehearsals or take part in workshops. A bar in the foyer offers a place to gather before or after events and chat with other visitors.
The exterior uses iron sheet piling as its facade material, giving the building a distinctive industrial appearance. This choice reflects the site's military past and creates a visually striking feature among Munich's other cultural venues.
