Guter Hirt, Modern concrete church in Hildesheim, Germany
Guter Hirt is a modern church in Hildesheim built with exposed concrete and an irregular polygonal design that abandons the traditional church layout. The interior spaces are shaped entirely by raw concrete surfaces that create a distinctive play of light.
Construction started in 1969 to serve a rapidly expanding residential area around Hildesheim. The design reflected a rethinking of how churches could function in modern urban neighborhoods.
In 2009, the church expanded its community services by adding a social goods hall to its daily lunch program, serving the diverse local population.
The building sits at the corner of Altfriedweg and Fahrenheitstrasse, surrounded by residential blocks. Note that access may be limited at certain times, so checking ahead is helpful for planning a visit.
The interior was designed in 1969 by local artist Paul König, who connected artistic elements with the concrete form. This collaboration between architect and artist created an unusual blend of structure and creative vision.
