Englischer Garten Meiningen, English garden in Meiningen, Germany
The Englischer Garten is a roughly rectangular landscape park of about 12 hectares in central Meiningen, laid out from 1782 north of the old town. It is gently hilly, rising toward the east, and holds two artificial ponds, the Großer Teich and Kleiner Teich, linked by a canal with several bridges and three small islands bearing tombs of the ducal family. Two main paths and many side paths open the park, which had 792 large trees in 2007.
Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen had the park laid out from 1782 north of the old town; an unnamed English landscape gardener drew the first plans, and August Daniel Zocher became the first gardener in 1784. From 1789 Johann Andreas Schaubach built the artificial Gothic ruins, bridges and grottoes at the western main entrance, which survive nearly unchanged. The park was extended south to the old town, and after about twenty years its basic layout of ponds, ruins, bridges and paths was complete.
People from Meiningen use the garden for daily walks and gatherings, with certain areas hosting seasonal events and performances. This living use shows how the space has remained a meeting place for the community across generations.
The park lies north of the old town, bounded by Lindenallee to the east, Marienstraße to the south and Charlottenstraße to the north; the main entrance is at the transition to the old town. Two main paths and numerous connecting paths open up the grounds, which rise slightly towards the east. The ponds are linked by a canal crossed by several bridges.
The park holds 792 large trees, counted in 2007. Among its monuments is Germany's first Brahms memorial, erected in 1899; the Brahms monument complex was restored in 2015. A stone at the main path north of the Großer Teich honours the Buttmann family, court gardeners across three generations.
